Releases 0.9.414 - 0.9.419: Change Log

Over the past few weeks, we completed several important infrastructure updates including upgrading to Elasticsearch 8, finishing the transition to Rails 7.1, and migrating the bookmarks table to create room for more bookmarks.

We also made some user-facing improvements, such as fixing various access and display bugs; clarifying some error messages, form labels, and page titles; and adding chapter numbers to comments in your inbox.

Special thanks and welcome to first-time contributors Abhinav Gupta, hk-contribs, TemperedPetals, and Vemmy RM! We'd also like to thank Dhiraj Mishra for reporting a security issue.

Details

0.9.414

In the process of installing the new Elasticsearch servers, we upgraded to Elasticsearch 8 on June 24!

  • [AO3-6259] - We upgraded the Elasticsearch gem to version 8.18.0.

0.9.415

On June 25, we finished off the last remaining parts of the update to Rails 7.1.

  • [AO3-6894] - We flipped the remaining configuration values to use the new defaults from Rails 7.1.

0.9.416

Our deploy on July 1 updated older language on the work search and filtering forms from "Author/Artist" to "Creator" and added chapter numbers to comments in your inbox, among other improvements.

  • [AO3-6050] - When accessing the Tag Wrangling page showing all relationship tags related to a character, tags would always be shown in alphabetical order, regardless of sort order. Now, tag wranglers can additionally sort through the tags by how many times they were used or by creation date.
  • [AO3-6273] - Sometimes, when you used the "Post Draft" button on a draft, the word count of the publicly posted work would be blank. It should now always be the correct number.
  • [AO3-6373] - If you blocked a user who had previously commented on your work, you could no longer freeze their comment. We fixed this, so you can now block users and freeze their comment threads in any order without problems.
  • [AO3-6735] - We fixed that when you left a comment on a news posts with comment moderation enabled, the resulting comment email would incorrectly tell you that the comment was on a work with moderated comments.
  • [AO3-6936] - We changed the browser page title on subscriptions pages to a format that matches other user pages: "username - Subscriptions | Archive of Our Own."
  • [AO3-6971] - We fixed an error that occurred if the "No Fandom" tag didn't exist, for example in a development installation of the Archive.
  • [AO3-7010] - Trying to access the chapter index of a work that's both in an unrevealed collection and hidden by an admin used to result in an error 500. We've fixed that so it now results in a normal permission error.
  • [AO3-7017] - If you knew the ID of a draft work or a work restricted to logged in users, you could access a few subpages of the work that revealed its title and blurb. Since that information isn't meant to be public, we've once again restricted access to these pages.
  • [AO3-7016] - We updated the gem we use to run database schema migrations of large tables.
  • [AO3-5345] - Collection maintainers get an email notification if they run matching in a gift exchange and the sign-ups are invalid. We've improved the text of this email and prepared it for translation.
  • [AO3-6541] - We changed the works search and the sorting and filtering options to use "Creator" instead of "Author/Artist" to match the terminology used by the rest of the site.
  • [AO3-6750] - Comments in your inbox now include the chapter number, so you don't have to follow the comment link to know where exactly it was left.
  • [AO3-6807] - If you tried to use an invalid URL for an external work or in your collection sign-up, you would sometimes get a 500 error. We fixed that so now you will always get a proper error message telling you that the URL is invalid.
  • [AO3-6999] - We removed some duplicate code for sending comment emails to admins.

0.9.417 & 0.9.418

On July 3 and July 4, we ran out of rows in the database table that stores bookmarks, so we had to move them to a larger table that can hold them all! Now you can once again add your own bookmarks to the 647 million we already have.

  • [AO3-7031] - We migrated the bookmarks table to be able to hold more rows and then migrated all other table columns that refer to bookmarks to also support the larger bookmark IDs.

0.9.419

On July 12, we deployed an assortment of minor changes that included allowing the accent-color property in skins and clarifying some error messages.

  • [AO3-6795] - When you were excluding a tag in a search and then made a syntax error when trying to filter those results, you'd get a 500 error. We've fixed this so it instead tells you that your query has a syntax error.
  • [AO3-6989] - If you tried to view the pseuds list for a user who didn't exist, you'd get redirected to the People Search page. That made sense in a way, but wasn't terribly consistent with other nonexistent pages. Now you'll get a 404 error instead, which makes it easier to check for typos in the URL you entered.
  • [AO3-7007] - We fixed a 500 error when a guest tried to add a work to a collection by directly going to the "Add To Collection" URL.
  • [AO3-7025] - We fixed a typo in one of the CSS properties in the Creating a Skin help pop-up.
  • [AO3-7022] - We changed the default comment setting for news posts to "Only registered users can comment."
  • [AO3-5344] - We prepared the email that you get when your work is invited to a collection for translation.
  • [AO3-7019] - You will now get an informative error message if you try to change your username to the same name as you currently have, instead of it silently doing nothing.
  • [AO3-7033] - When you access a skin, the skin title is now part of the browser page title.
  • [AO3-7041] - You can now use the accent-color property in site and work skins!
  • [AO3-6852] - We removed some old unused scripts for testing gift exchange matching.

Redline

All I told [instagram.com profile] sashagee before we went is that it's about racing.

Redline IS about racing--the entire movie is about a once-every-five-years race called Redline where, in the space future of flying cars, they requires four wheels and powerful engines. The protagonist is named JP ("James Punkhead"), has a foot-long pompadour, and drives a car called "Trans Am" that looks like a sci fi Pontiac Firebird. Some of the other racers include a cyborg named "Machine Head" who has his own themesong where the chorus goes "Machine Heeeeeeeeaaad!🎵🎶", a pair of intergalactic bounty hunters, two Japanese dudes from Earth (animeified versions of the stars of Mole Brothers), or a pair of magical girls in stripperific costumes called "Team Boin" (Team Bouncy). There are planet names like Dorothy and Sweetgrass (a planet of magical girls--though they don't use their magic during the Redline) and Roboworld. Roboworld is the planet that the Redline takes place on, much to Roboworld's annoyance--it's some kind of military dictatorship, with a blasted rocky hellscape surface, and the racers race through a minefield (they're so fast the mines don't blow up until they're out of danger), through a secret testing area where illegal bioweapons are being developed, and all the way to the main Roboworld governmental building. There's a mafia sideplot, there's a love story, at one point there's a kaijū fight in the background, each of the secondary characters has their own short arc and just enough personality to be compelling but not enough to take over the narrative--for Machine Head, he first appears looming over another racer and says “Move.” The other racer says “I’m not moving!” and there’s a moment of tension before Machine Head says, “Fine. I’ll go around you then.”

It's great. [instagram.com profile] sashagee loved it even though before we went she was incredibly confused why I would invite her to a movie about racing.

Also I did not realize that the voice actor for JP was Asano Tadanobu, who recently won an Emmy for his work on Shōgun! We were talking with [twitter.com profile] neilworms afterwards and he mentioned that, as well as some of the other cameos that people who had seen other Koike Takeshi works.

The venue really made a difference, I feel like. The last time I watched Redline for [livejournal.com profile] ping816's anime discussion group, I of course watched it on a 1080p computer screen by myself, and I liked it, but it was nothing like watching it in a movie theatre with a full crowd that all laughed when any of the many comedy bits of the movie happened. I did not realize that Facets was such a title in the independent/foreign cinema space. They have a lot of other screenings--they're showing Tampopo this month--and I should really get on a mailing list so I know what's going on.

Unfortunately, I don't have nearly as much praise for the dinner we went to beforehand. We joined some other people from Anime Chicago at Mi Nueva Tierra nearby, which has 4.5 stars on Google but based on our experience there I have no idea why. We got burrito bowls--[instagram.com profile] sashagee had steak, I had roasted cauliflower--and they were fine but nothing special. She got horchata, I got a blueberry Old Fashioned--again, fine--and the bill came out to $60 for the two of us for a meal we came away from thinking "Eh, I guess." I wish we had all gone with [twitter.com profile] spacedragon's initial suggestion of going to the nearby Strings ramen, or that we had gone with [facebook.com profile] jeremy.podczerwinski and [facebook.com profile] erendira.morales to the vegan Thai place they went to. Well, for next time we'll have to remember that.

Staycation time

It's not actually a staycation because I didn't take any time off from work, but this last week has felt a bit like a staycation because Laila has been at the grandparents the entire time. The original plan was that yesterday we would go out to visit my parents and stay for dinner, drop Laila off, go to see Redline at Facets Theater on Saturday, and then have Laila come back on Sunday or Monday. That all folded when [instagram.com profile] sashagee called the dentist's office last week, expecting to be scheduling her root canal for some time at the end of the month, and was told that she could come in on Monday. Cue the scramble to ask my parents if they could take Laila early, which they very kindly agreed to do, and Laila went off for a week.

[instagram.com profile] sashagee said that the actual root canal wasn't too bad--it was over in twenty minutes or so--but the preparation for the root canal was lengthy and annoying. She was back there for two hours, with the dentist occasionally poking and her and her saying "No, it's not numb enough yet," before it was finally ready to do the surgery. The actual root canal only took maybe twenty minutes and then she came back and we took the bus back home. I had arranged to work at home for the next couple days based on my experience with [instagram.com profile] sashagee's wisdom teeth removal, but it turned out to be mostly unnecessary. The first day she borrowed my big scarf to wrap around her head and hold some ice next to her jaw, and thereafter she was basically okay except for avoiding hot foods. Her wisdom teeth took weeks for her to really get better.

Despite not having Laila, we obviously couldn't do that much due to [instagram.com profile] sashagee's root canal. We didn't go out to eat, we didn't go anywhere, and she wasn't even feeling well enough to walk to the farmer's market on Wednesday so I went myself. She's spent some time fishing in Final Fantasy XIV, I'd spend time doing FATEs with her or working on Cataclysm, and she slowly got her energy back. The main goal was to make sure that she was able to go to the Redline screening, and it looks like that'll happen.

Happy Birthday [instagram.com profile] sashagee!

She always forgets how old she is but she doesn't forget her birthday.

I took today off, partially because of her birthday but also because last night was [instagram.com profile] sashagee's birthday present--a Babymetal concert:

2025-07-08 - BabyMetal concert

Babymetal always put on a great show and this time was no different--they have basically infinite energy even though they've been doing this for fifteen years. The last time we went to see Babymetal, the show was very long--Babymetal didn't even come out on stage until 10:30 p.m. or so. This time they were out on stage at 8:30, finished by 9:40 or so, and we were home by 10:15 p.m., albeit having to run home in the pouring rain. I did think it was kind of funny seeing all the metal fans scurrying for cover. [instagram.com profile] sashagee's comment was that it made her mascara run so it was extra metal cred (she was full Baby side of Babymetal, in pink with glitter on and odango hair).

When we got there the line was wrapped almost all around the block, so we waited for a while and were eventually joined by [instagram.com profile] confuciousdragon. He split off when we got inside because [instagram.com profile] sashagee wanted to grab another Babymetal T-shirt, and the whole time we heard music coming from upstairs. We thought they were just pumping up the crowd, like what happened later when we were waiting for Babymetal to set up and they played System Of A Down's "Chop Suey" and almost the entire crowd started singing along, but when we got through the line, finished paying, and finally got upstairs, it turned out that Bloodywood had started their set at the exact time the doors opened(!!) and were almost on their last song! We got about one-and-a-half songs before they left the stage and then we had to wait thirty minutes for Jinjer to set up.

Jinjer wasn't really my thing--I was probably a more little critical than I should have been because the last song I had heard from Bloodywood was fantastic--but the story that [instagram.com profile] confuciousdragon told us did make me more sympathetic. He said they're a Ukrainian band who were just getting big when the war started and most of their songs are about their experience. It makes me wish I could have understood the lyrics to their songs.

Babymetal, of course, put on an extremely high-energy show that was tons of fun, and unlike last time, [instagram.com profile] sashagee didn't start feeling bad so we could keep our place the entire concert! We were in the back left the whole time, watched the whole show, and then [instagram.com profile] sashagee bought two more t-shirts (for Bloodywood and Jinjer) on the way out. Good thing we had them, too, because we needed them to cover our heads as we ran for cover from the rain.

I took the next day off because it was the actual day of [instagram.com profile] sashagee's birthday, and so she would have time to recover, most of the day she didn't do anything. We sat around for most of the day until the evening, when we went to her birthday dinner downtown at Ema. We ate there before last year, when we were wandering around down town and passed it and I suggested it as a good place, and [instagram.com profile] sashagee liked it enough that she seized on it for her birthday dinner. We got some of the same things we got last time, a hummus and a salad, and I got a "charred eggplant" that turned out to just be baba ghanoush under a rename (I was hoping for actual charred eggplant). The real start was the dessert, though, just like last time. We skipped the vanilla panna cotta and I got a lava cake and [instagram.com profile] sashagee got a pear honey pie. Both of them were delicious, though [instagram.com profile] sashagee didn't realize that the pears had been absolutely soaked in alcohol until she was eating them by themselves (without the pie).

When we were done, we didn't have any other plans and [instagram.com profile] sashagee was a bit tired, so we got back on the L and headed home.
